NaNoWriMo Eve

Yes, it is just a few hours until NaNoWriMo begins! This year I am actually going to participate, fully. Like writing an entire 50,000+ rough draft. I have all of the things I need in place: Good and Plenty candy and a plan. The only thing I didn’t plan for was Hurricane Sandy to come tearing through Pennsylvania. Luckily, I have power but schools are closed and kids are home. This means lots of kids in the house from the neighborhood and me not having quiet to write. Ah well. I think I will manage!

This will be the last you’ll hear from me for awhile. I have a few book tours scheduled here on the blog, but other than that I will be incommunicado. I will be writing. And thinking. Occasionally I will poke my head onto Twitter and see what the rest of you are up to, but I won’t be there long. Promise.

For those of you writing and participating in NaNoWriMo, I wish you luck! Don’t forget that this is the time to write a rough draft. You will not have a completed manuscript ready to submit to agents in December. Take your time and do this thing right. Find a critique partner. Edit. Revise. Repeat.

Matt Archer: Monster Hunter~Promo and Giveaway

Matt Archer: Monster Hunter (Matt Archer #1)

By Kendra C. Highley

Release Date: 08/18/12

299 pages

Summary from Goodreads:

Fourteen-year-old Matt Archer spends his days studying Algebra, hanging out with his best friend and crushing on the Goddess of Greenhill High, Ella Mitchell. To be honest, he thinks his life is pretty lame until he discovers something terrifying on a weekend camping trip at the local state park.

Monsters are real. And living in his backyard.

But that’s not the half of it. After Matt is forced to kill a strange creature to save his uncle, he finds out that the weird knife he took from his uncle’s bag has a secret, one that will change Matt’s life. The knife was designed with one purpose: to hunt monsters. And it’s chosen Matt as its wielder.

Now Matt’s part of a world he didn’t know existed, working with a covert military unit dedicated to eliminating walking nightmares. Faced with a prophecy about a looming dark war, Matt soon realizes his upcoming Algebra test is the least of his worries.

His new double life leaves Matt wondering which is tougher: hunting monsters or asking Ella Mitchell for a date?

***Author Interview***

1. Is Matt Archer: Monster Hunter part of a series or a stand-alone?

Monster Hunter is intended to be the first in a four book series (although I’m toying with adding a novella at the end). It basically follows Matt through the end of high school.

2. What would you say is Matt’s best and worst quality?

Matt’s best quality is his tenacity. He’s not the biggest or the strongest, but when he knows he needs to do something, he throws everything he has into it.  His worst quality is his temper.  You see glimpses of that in the first book, but it’s even more pronounced in the second (Blade’s Edge).

3. What are the best 3 words you would use to describe Matt?

Dutiful, determined and mischievous

4. If you could jump into a book, and live in that world, which would it be?

Oh, that’s a tough one!  Right now, either Ravka from Shadow and Bone  by Leigh Bardugo or the Kyatt Islands from Encrypted by Lindsay Buroker.  It’s hard to choose.

5.  If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?

She Didn’t Wear Mom Jeans

6.  What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you’d be embarrassed to admit?

So, my daughter and I are addicted to Dancing with the Stars.  It’s so cheesy, but she loves it, and I love watching it with her.

7.  Who is your favorite male book character and why (Besides Matt)?

Right now I’m crushing on Hector from Crown of Embers but I’d have to say Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings.  I guess you could say I have a thing for strong, slightly dangerous, noble guys.

8.  Describe your book in 10 words or less…

Armed with magic knife, guy defeats monsters and gets girl.

What did I think?

First just let me say that I took a huge leap of faith reading this book. I wasn’t quite sure if I’d like it, but my tastes have really changed and I thought I’d give it a chance. I mean, three friends with powers connected to the elements? Can we say “The House of Night Series?” Not really! This series really has no other books out there that I can compare them too.

Shauna created such a real group of friends, who just happen to have special powers. I love how in the beginning of Earth, Shanya tries to save Tracy from her abusive boyfriend. Just the guts she had to stick up for Tracy hooked me immediately!

And the end? Wow! I obviously cannot tell you what happens, but know that it is very well written:)
